Our Verdict: While it’s definitely one of the quietest models of inverter generators on the market, it’s not the most powerful. The generator boasts a six-hour run time, but this only applies if the generator is kept at twenty-five percent load capacity. This means, if you need to use more appliances, bumping it up to fifty percent load capacity, you should only expect a run time of three to four hours. Bring it closer to the max load capacity and you’re looking at only a couple of hours of run time. Performance

However, compared to other models in this price range this generator has a six-hour runtime at just twenty-five percent load capacity. Additionally, it has a very small engine, which means when it comes to fuel usage, it’s not the most efficient on the market.

If not having a pull-start is an important feature, there are other small electric start generators worth considering.

The generator also comes equipped with the popular eco mode, however, this mode isn’t able to handle loads over one thousand watts and will switch back to standard mode should the generator reach that wattage limit.

As we mentioned earlier, in terms of noise, this model excels, producing only fifty-one decibels when it’s operating at twenty-five percent load capacity and fifty-five decibels when it’s at seventy-five percent load capacity. 

It also features an ergonomic design, which makes it very portable and easy to haul around. Yet, at forty-eight pounds it’s slightly heavier than other models in this price range. 

The two-year warranty is decent for the price. However, if you do run into any issues you’ll be required to send in the generator for repairs or the manufacturer will send the parts to you. Unfortunately, Wen doesn’t have many local service centers.  

There were some issues with the side panels of the generator. For routine maintenance, the side panels must be removed. Many campers reported that these panels are made out of a flimsy plastic.

If you’ve never purchased a generator before, then you may be confused regarding the differences between an inverter generator, a standard generator, and an inverter. 

The Conventional Generator 

A conventional generator has been around for years and the basic concept behind this style has basically remained unchanged. This type of generator consists of an energy source such as gasoline, propane, or diesel, which powers the motor attached to the alternator, which produces electricity. The motor runs at a constant speed, which is why this type of generator is significantly louder than an inverter, and one of the main reasons you wouldn’t want to be caught dead with it at a campsite. Typically, the conventional generator runs at around 3600 RPMs to produce the standard current that most homes use. Should the RPM output fluctuate, so will the electrical output. 

What’s an Inverter? 

An inverter draws power from a DC source, usually a solar panel or car battery. The inverter will then utilize an electronic circuit in order to convert the power into AC power. This converted power can be at any type of required frequency and voltage with the use of appropriate equipment, however, the most common combination involves taking a twelve-volt DC battery from an RV, car, or boat and making it into the one-hundred-and-twenty-volt AC power that’s required for most appliances in the home. 

The Rise of the Camp Generator

Also known as the inverter generator, this type of generator is relatively new and made possible by high-tech magnets and advanced electronic circuitry. These are usually three-phase generators that output AC current just like a conventional generator, however, the current is then converted to DC and converted back to AC power. 

Because the camping generator uses both technologies used by a conventional generator and an inverter, they’re called inverter generators.

So, the obvious result is a shorter runtime due to the limited fuel capacity. 

Regardless, the inverter generator features engines that are fuel efficient and have the ability to adjust the engine speeds to the load. This means they tend to make better use of their fuel. For their applications, their runtime of eight to ten hours is usually more than adequate. Additionally, since these generators are more fuel efficient, this results in reduced exhaust emissions.

Generators are available in a variety of sizes, which you should choose based on your power needs. With inverter and conventional generators, the wattage can range from as low as two-hundred watts up to fifty thousand watts. Obviously, the higher wattage conventional models are much bigger than compact inverter generators. 

Power Quality 

Conventional generators are nothing more than engines that are connected to alternators that run at speeds that produce the ideal AC frequency, regardless of load size. 

With inverter models, the engine is connected to an alternator that produces AC electricity, just like a traditional generator, but a rectifier is also used to convert the AC to DC. Parallel Benefits 

Many models of inverters can be paired with another unit in order to double their power. This parallel capability means you’ll be able to use a couple of smaller generators in order to provide the same amount of amperage and wattage that a conventional generator can, and all without sacrificing the benefits of a more portable, quieter, lighter, smaller inverter unit. If you purchased a three-thousand-watt generator, these often come with a thirty amp one hundred and twenty-five-volt outlet which also won’t be compatible with the power cord in your RV. Unless you have an RV that’s generator ready you’ll need to purchase an adapter that will plug into a thirty amp, one hundred and twenty-five-volt outlet. This will allow you to plug in either a fifty or thirty-amp cord. 

An RV will usually come with a long power cord that’s stored close to the outside door. To use, simply pull it out and attach the female end to your rig, connecting the adapter to the RV power cord. Next, just plug in the other end of the cord to your camp generator and you’re done. It’s that simple. 

Most manufacturers don’t recommend plugging an RV in until the generator has had some time to warm up, typically three to five minutes. 

Once you’re connected you can use the household plugs in the RV and any major appliances such as an AC or a microwave. Of course, the type and number of appliances you can run will depend on the generator’s size and power capability. 

When your gen is running, it’s also charging up batteries via the RV’s built-in charger. It’s also powering up the outlets in the rig.

Intake

With this cycle, the air-fuel mixture travels to the combustion chamber. This cycling event occurs once the piston has moved from TDC to BDC. The piston’s movement toward BDC is what creates a very low amount of pressure in the cylinder. Atmospheric pressure is used in order to force the mixture through the intake valve where it travels to the cylinder, filling the low-pressure area. Next, the cylinder continues to fill past the BDC as the mixture freely flows as the piston initiates a change in direction. The intake valve will then close, sealing the air-fuel fluid inside the cylinder.

Compression

A compression stroke involves the compression of the air-fuel liquid inside the cylinder. The engine’s combustion chamber is sealed in order to form a charge, which is the amount of compressed fluid that’s trapped inside the chamber. By compressing the fuel, more energy can be released once a charge is ignited. Both the exhaust and intake valves have to be sealed shut in order to ensure that the cylinder is sealed properly for compression. The compression process basically squeezes or reduces a charge from a large to a small volume in the chamber. In order to maintain the momentum needed to compress the charge a flywheel is used.

Once the piston has compressed the charge there will be an increase in the amount of compressive force supplied by the efforts of the piston which causes heat to generate. The heating and compression of the fuel vapor in the charge will lead to a rise in the charge temperature, as well as a rise in fuel vaporization. This increase in temperature will uniformly occur throughout the chamber in order to produce faster fuel oxidation after ignition.

Fuel vaporization occurs as drops of the fuel vaporize from the heat generated by the piston. Only gas vapors ignite. The droplet surface area that’s exposed to ignite the flames will allow for more efficient burning of the charge in the combustion chamber. The increase in the droplet surface area will allow gas to increase the amount of vapor that’s released as opposed to the gas remaining in liquid form.

Ignition

The combustion or ignition event will occur once the charge is ignited and oxidized rapidly via a chemical reaction used to release heat energy.

Power

The power stroke involves a process in which heated expanding gases force the piston away from the cylinder. The force and combined subsequent motion are then transferred through a connecting rod that’s used to apply force to the crankshaft. The amount of torque applied will initiate the rotation of the crankshaft. The amount of force used is determined by the size and pressure of the piston, in addition to the throw of the engine.

Exhaust

Exhaust will occur once gas is expelled from the chamber and released into the atmosphere.

How the 2 Stroke Inverter Stands up to the 4 Stroke Generator

When a generator is running, a load should always be connected to it. This helps with creating a very strong magnetic field. But before a generator is switched off, the breaker or switch should be turned off before disconnected. If you end up switching the generator off with a load connected then it can easily demagnetize or drain the generator’s electromagnet. You should also keep a close eye on the fuel level for this reason.

Lack of Residual Magnetism: The Solution

You can go about fixing this problem a couple of different ways:

  • Battery
  • Drill

The first method involves using a twelve-volt battery. To do, first, find the generator’s voltage regulator and unplug the wires that are connected to the machine’s brushes. There are usually two wires. Next, take one of the wires and connect it to the generator’s ground battery terminal. Plug in a small device, such as a light and switch on the generator’s breaker and turn on the motor. Now, grab the battery and connect it to the red wire on the terminal for a period of three to six seconds.

Disconnect the wires and replace the plug. In order to avoid damaging the regulator, unplug the brush wires from the voltage regulator. Because dangerous voltages may be present, don’t make contact with the voltage regulator.

This should solve the issue and your generator should be up and running, producing the correct amount of power output.

If using a twelve-volt battery proved to be ineffective, then the next best method is using an electric drill.

Grab the drill and plug it into one of the outlets on the generator. Fire up the generator. While you’re pressing the trigger on the drill, you should spin the chuck in the opposite direction in order to excite the field and cause the generator to produce power. If you’ve tried to spin the chuck in one direction, with no luck, then try spinning it in the other direction.

The reason behind this method is that the drill’s motor acts as a sort of generator when it’s spun backward. Inside the drill, the motor’s magnets will induce a voltage into the motor winding. This is then fed back via the trigger cord, into the generator’s outlet. It then travels to the power winding of the stator.

Both methods are very easy to use and should quickly have your generator up and running. However, if your generator has not been used for several months, you’ve used a voltmeter to test the power output, and you’ve noticed that its performance is off, then you may need to adjust the generator’s voltage output.

Some of the leading inverter generators are designed to run for hundreds of hours with no problems. But this doesn’t mean that engine can handle it, even with a constant supply of fuel. While this is merely a suggestion in terms of the longevity of the generator, the true lifespan of any given model will depend on many factors.

Just keep in mind these machines are definitely not designed to run continuously for the guaranteed amount of hours.

The fact remains that most generators will only last for a period of three to four thousand hours. This is excellent if you only use the generator for RV’ing or camping, but not so much if you need to solely rely on an inverter generator in the event of a widespread power outage for a week or two.
